Collection of Authentic Documents
In order to fully value the significance of the Concord School in Loyalhanna Township, Westmoreland County, PA, information has been collected and posted here from several primary sources. The materials provided here demonstrate the Concord School's role in early Loyalhanna Township, Pennsylvania schooling.
The Concord School was originally built in 1848 as an independent school sometimes called a "subscription" or "pay" school. The building was constructed by local community craftsman. In the mid-1800s the school was considered to be "first class" since it was equipped with the most modern of furnishings and had two stoves to heat. One stove would be for spring and fall, and the other would serve the winter or colder days. For more information and to examine reports: Concord Independent School District
Upon joining the Loyahanna Township School District in 1911, the buildings seem to age quickly as modern schoolhouses were being built around the township. Concord was given a number and served as one of eight schools as "number 6". Slowly students were being consolidated and transferred into newer two-room buildings such as Elrico and Moween Schools. Concord, Myers, Stewart Schools were later closed in in 1953. In 1959, all schoolhouses in Loyalhanna Township were replaced by the new Willard School.
