Concord Independent School District, 1848-1911; Concord School No. 6, 1911-1953

The historical Concord Schoolhouse is an authentically restored “learning-living” school museum located in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  In 1848, local families of the surrounding area built this independent school to educate their children.  Today, this school museum exemplifies early rural American education, while it offers visitors the feeling of being in an actual one-room school.  In addition, sample documentation of over 160 years of local history, including accounts of teachers, facts and student memories, can be found under history.

The Concord School was completely restored through the efforts of the late Mrs. E.C. Ent. Mrs. Ent privately restored this school upon purchasing the farm in which the building resides. The restoration has taken several years and many local craftsmen and family members to return the school into its original condition.  IN 2014, the Concord School was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The story of the Concord school restoration can be reviewed here.

Mrs. Ent's daughter, Dr. Veronica Ent, opens the school and museum to private groups and organizations.  To arrange a visit back in time to early common schools era, contact Dr. Ent for the Concord School and Carriage House Information at 412-558-1962 (call or text). For information about visiting and outside speaking arrangements, please see programs.

Carriage House at the Concord School

In 2017 the Concord School of 1848 became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and foundation. Seven acres were preserved to accompany the schoolhouse and outbuildings. A new building was constructed in 2018 to house the artifacts and store a large collection of horse-drawn carriages that were collected over the years by the late Mrs. Ent. Upon completion of this building, Mr. Hobart (Butch) Kane combined his collection with Mrs. Ent’s to create the what is seen today. Mr. Kane provided several restored sleighs and carriages along with the building’s one-of-a-kind centerpiece, the Kane Dairy Studebaker Milk Wagon. The Carriage House can be reserved for small venue events and other activities. Please see the Carriage House page for more information.
